Susan Hastings Obituary

Susan Ann Hastings, of Seaford Delaware, entered the gates of Heaven to be with our Lord and Savior early on June 24, 2022 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 63 years old.

Born July 2, 1958 in Seaford Delaware, she was the daughter of Edward and Virginia Short and was one of three children. Susan graduated from Seaford Senior High School, where she enjoyed twirling the batons, and went to Georgetown’s Vo-tech school for cosmetology.

Throughout the years she worked as a nurse’s assistant and therapy assistant, and retired from Genesis Seaford Center after 34 years.

Susan married Samuel Hastings when she was 19 years old. They had three children. Together, they traveled the States while Samuel was serving in the Marines. In 2017 Susan became the caregiver to her husband, where she devoted her time to him. Together they enjoyed crabbing and fishing in Deal Island, trips to Grottos Pizza and Thrashers in Rehoboth on the boardwalk, trips to Suicide Bridge, and regular Pizza King dates. They were married for 45 years.

An absolutely incredible cook, Susan won first in the state of Delaware for cooking competitions, and she served her family the best dishes all year round. She enjoyed having the family over for Easter and Thanksgiving where she would always host and cook amazing meals. During Easter, Susan would also host the family’s annual Easter egg hunts, occasionally hiding a golden egg with money. Susan attended church at Christ Evangelistic with her family and was a member of the Seaford Associated Charities with her late mother, “Ginny”, providing gifts and food to those in her community during Christmas time. Susan always found herself giving to others throughout her entire life. She had a heart to serve.

Susan was also an extremely hard worker. She built her own ponds for the front and back yard, where she created an oasis for her and her Koi fish. Susan was never afraid to get her hands dirty, as she enjoyed planting flowers and gardening.

Susan is survived by her husband, Samuel Hastings, three children, Bruce Hastings, Jennifer Hastings, and Sarah Ramirez.  She is also survived by her siblings, Edward and Steve Short, and her sisters-in-law, Denise and Sheri Short; 3 grandchildren Shianna and Kelsey Nunemann, Tommy and his wife Tristin Nunemann, and 3 great-grandchildren: Arya, Asher, and Alex Nunemann.

A Celebration of Life will be held on her birthday, July 2, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Evangelistic Church.

The family would appreciate donations to help provide assistance with Susan’s husband’s care. Donations can be made out to her daughter, Jennifer Hastings. Thank you for helping the family during this time.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the Registered Nurses and doctors at TidalHealth Nanticoke, specifically on CDU and in the ICU. The staff truly cared for Susan as if she were their very own “mommom”. There are no words to describe how grateful the family is for their compassion and for always advocating for Susan. Additionally, the family would like to say thank you to the nurses with VITAS who allowed Susan to be comfortable in her home.
