It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Skinner, a cherished figure in the Seaford community, beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
Born in Seaford, Delaware, Shirley dedicated her life to nurturing others through her work and personal passions. She studied nursing at the Nursing School of Wilmington and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from Wilmington College. She dedicated many years to nursing before moving into teaching, helping to shape the next generation of nurses at Sussex County Vocational Technical School in Georgetown. She finished her career as the In-Service Director at Stockley Center, focusing again on the training and development of people.
In retirement, Shirley never slowed down. She was an active volunteer for many organizations including the Laurel Garden Club, the Seaford Historical Society, the Acorn Club of Seaford, and, to continue her passion for caring for others, the Seaford Hospital emergency room. Her "First Grade Club," a group of lifelong friends, enjoyed countless meals and gatherings together. She loved traveling the world, especially enjoying cruises with her family and friends. While she loved grand adventures, she also enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and loved nothing more than sitting back with a glass of wine. Known for her thrifty shopping skills, Shirley was a master "thrifter." She passed on her expertise to her children and grandchildren, with whom she shared many joyous shopping adventures. Her home was a welcoming sanctuary for every child (and every kitten) that came into her life. Her grandchildren will tell you that her middle name was "Ishkabibble", but -surprise- her real middle name was Inez.
Shirley leaves behind a large and loving family, including her brother George H. Skinner, her children Tom (Bonnie) Thomas, Scott (Sheila) Thomas, Jenny (Deane) McClenaghan, Larry (Gloria) Fogel, and Matt (Jill) Fogel. Her thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren will miss their "mum-mum" very dearly. She is predeceased by her parents, George and Helen Skinner, her daughter-in-law Po-Kim Fogel, and her granddaughter Casey Fogel.
Shirley's legacy of joy, love, and laughter will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to a no-kill cat shelter, a cause close to Shirley’s heart.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday. May 20, 2024, at 10 AM at Odd Fellows Cemetery, 514 3rd St, Seaford, DE 19973.
