Sandra Louise Orbison, 86, of Seaford, passed away on September 4, 2021. She was born and reared in Indianapolis, IN and after several stops along the way, she made her home in Seaford, DE.
She earned a Bachelors Degree in French and English from Butler University, and a Masters in English and in Gifted and Talented Education from the University of Michigan and Widener University, respectively. Those who knew her will be surprised that she was recruited to play basketball at Butler, by her Pi Beta Phi sorority.
After beginning her career teaching English literature, composition, and French in Luddington, MI, she moved to France and taught at the American School of Paris in Louveciennes, the American Army School, and The Sorbonne. Upon returning to the United States, she taught at Friends’ Central in the Philadelphia area before she moved to her second home, Seaford, DE and presided over hundreds of research papers, et al., at Seaford High School.
Raised a lawyer’s daughter, (one of her favorite phrases) she applied the analytical skills she observed in her father to a lifetime of teaching literature and her passion, writing. She dedicated her life to a purpose she believed was greater than she was individually.
Preceded in death by her parents, Robert H. and Beatrice (Batty) Orbison, her beloved Matty Porter, and best friend Barbara Nancarrow, she is survived by her sister Carol Orbison of Indianapolis and dearest friends who were as family, Susan Nancarrow, Bill and Cheryl Nancarrow, and their son Alex, longtime caregiver Toni Harris, and her beloved cat, Bradford.
She was a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association and the Seaford Acorn Club.
Funeral Services will be on Friday, September 10th at 7 PM at the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St, Seaford, where friends may call from 6 to 7.
