Richard Olen “Dick” Wasson, 68, of Seaford passed away on Monday, May 8th, 2023. He was born November 3rd, 1954 to James and Nellie Wasson.
Dick, a loving and proud husband and father, was preceded in death by his wife, Chrissy, in 2015. He is survived by his son James Matthew Wasson (Rachel), daughter Caitlin Patton (Travis), and grandson Ezra Patton.
Upon graduating from Seaford Senior High School in 1972, Dick earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Wake Forest University. After returning to Delmarva, he earned a degree in Elementary Education from Salisbury State University. While attending school, he had several different jobs including bus driver and security at a clam factory. He would proudly declare with his deadpan sense of humor that not a single clam escaped under his watch. Dick made his career in probation and parole, moving between the Seaford and Georgetown offices several times during his 34-year career, and retired in 2016.
Dick met his wife, Chrissy, through work in 1980. After a whirlwind three-month romance, he proposed and they married on July 25th, 1981. They went on to have James (called by his middle name Matthew) in 1986 and Caitlin in 1989.
Known for his dry wit, Dick was a voracious reader who also enjoyed woodworking. In his youth, he was a member of the soccer team and played the saxophone in his high school and college marching bands. He also coached T-ball, soccer, and softball for his children’s sports teams. In the summers, he loved to spend his time surf fishing or boating on the Sassafras River with his family. Through the fall and winter, he enjoyed hunting for doves and geese, and was an active participant in Ducks Unlimited for many years. He had a lovely bass singing voice and enjoyed listening to classic rock music and comedians.
Services will be held at 10AM on Monday, May 15th at Mt. Olivet UMC, 315 High St. Seaford, DE. A time of sharing and refreshments will follow at Loakal Branch 501 N Bi State Blvd, Delmar, DE.
