After graduation Richard joined the Coast Guard. He did a tour off the coast in Africa while he served. During his time in the Coast Guard Richard reconnected with Sharon Short and they kept in touch while he was away. Upon his discharge in 1970 he and Sharon got married June 12, 1970. Richard worked at Baltimore Trust Company, Greenwood Trust Company, and eventually Discover Bank after they bought out Greenwood Trust, where he worked as Vice President. After retiring from Discover Bank, Richard took his knowledge of home improvement and put them to use. He was a jack of trades, serving many of his customers with wonderful craftsmen work.

He was an avid member Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville, serving on many committees. Richard was also a bowler out of Milford Bowling Lanes in the Harrington Business Men's League on Tuesday night, and in those times bowled a 300 a few years ago.
