R. Jane Mathis of Seaford, Delaware died Friday, July 21st, 2023, peacefully at her home. She was 78 years old. Mrs. Mathis was born in Washington, DC on February 15th, 1945, to the late James and Mary Peckham. She was raised in Kensington, MD and graduated from Wheaton High School and the University of Maryland where she received her BA in Business Administration.
Mrs. Mathis worked as a secretary and was a small business owner for a time, running the Burrsville General Store with her late husband, Thomas. She retired from the Delaware Division of Public Health as an Administrative Assistant.
She was an avid reader and loved to knit, crochet, and sew, but she also relished her time sitting on her back dock fishing and puttering around her yard. She had an adventurous streak as well, section hiking on the Appalachian Trail with her sister and brother Tim and soaring over the eastern shore of Maryland in a hot air balloon with her sister. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed making and decorating elaborate gingerbread houses during the holidays.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Thomas “Buddy” Mathis in January of 2023. She is survived by; her sons, Thomas E. Mathis III of Denton, MD, Michael A. Mathis of Denton, MD, and Eric E. Mathis of New Castle, DE.; her sister Mary Perkins (Kenneth); and her brothers Tim Peckham, Jim Peckham (Lori), and Edward Parrish (Carolyn). She is also survived by multiple grandchildren including Tyler Mathis, Caitlyn Mathis, and Aidan Mathis.
