RICHARD PEGRAM Obituary

Richard Glen Pegram, 95, of Seaford, Delaware passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2019.   Richard was born in Wallburg, North Carolina and spent his childhood in Bassett, Virginia, where he was the second oldest of five children.  He is predeceased by his mother and father, Carrie Hines Pegram and Thomas Roger Pegram.  He is also predeceased by his sister, Doris P. Maxey, and brother Bruce H. Pegram.

Richard always spoke fondly of his many memories growing up in Bassett, Virginia and spending time with extended family in Wallburg, North Carolina, especially with his cousins, Sarah Barnes, and the late Jimmie Hines.  As a young man, he served in the United States Navy serving in World War II on the U.S.S. St. Paul in the Pacific.   When he returned from service, he attended Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.  He eventually went to work for E.I. du Pont De Nemours, & Company in Martinsville, Virginia, where he met his wife Mary C. Pegram of Danville, Virginia.  Richard and Mary married in September of 1959 and relocated to Seaford, Delaware in 1962, where Richard worked in Production and Planning with the Dupont Company until retiring in 1985.

Richard enjoyed many sports and activities. He was an active member of Grace Baptist Church, where he enjoyed serving as a deacon and singing in the choir.  He enjoyed sports and activities at the Seaford Golf & Country Club, where he played tennis and was an avid golfer. However, Richard’s greatest love was his wife of almost 60 years, his children and grandchildren.  He was often seen playing in the yard or fishing off the dock with his grandchildren.  He was happiest when he was with his family, gathered at home or on vacations to Williamsburg, Virginia, Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Long Beach, North Carolina with his brothers.

Richard is known for his relaxed and contented demeanor. He embraced everyone for who they are and was appreciative of all his friends and family.  He was a true southern gentleman, as he approached life with humility and always showed respect and kindness to others. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and was a true representation of his love for and belief in Jesus Christ.  He was blessed to be neighbors with the Hearn and Trice families, who provided years of friendship, comfort and support.  He was also blessed to have a true angel, Gloria Elliott, to provide ongoing care and companionship.

Richard is survived by his two brothers, John T. Pegram (Phyllis) and Joe S. Pegram (Peggy), both of Bassett, Virginia, and a brother-in-law, Creed Maxey of Bassett, Virginia.  He is also survived by his son William R. Pegram (Megan) and daughter Susan L. Pegram (Kyle).  He is also survived by five grandchildren, William R. Pegram, Jr. (Alyson), Nathan Pegram, Alyson Wallace, Thomas Asher Wallace, Jr., and Emma Pegram, as well as close family friend, Thomas A. Wallace, Sr. (Krista).
