Nelson Eddie Ortiz Sr. 76, Of Georgetown Delaware, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at his daughter’s home in Seaford, Delaware.
Born on July 1, 1949, in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Emilio and Paula Guzman-Ortiz. As a child, Nelson moved with his family from Puerto Rico to New Jersey, where he spent much of his early life. In 1974, he relocated to Delaware, where he would build a life rooted in service, hard work, and deep devotion to family.
Nelson was one of eight siblings. He and his wife, Lucille, owned and operated a landscaping and sweeping business for 39 years. He also worked for more than 20 years as a loss prevention officer, and earlier in life, held maintenance roles in the poultry industry. He proudly served his community as an EMT and a volunteer with the Carlisle Fire Department. Nelson’s life was a reflection of quiet service—he gave his time, his heart, and his hands without hesitation.
He was a proud father to his children:
Nelson Jr. (Kim), Matthew Ortiz, Christine Ortiz and Yolanda Ortiz;
and three stepchildren: Bonnie Pedrick (George), Raymond Leyanna, and David Johnson (Melissa) and survived by three siblings Nelida Saldana, Confessor Ortiz and Sebastian Ortiz.
He was a beloved grandfather to 18 grandchildren:
CJ, Brandon, Peyton, Chase, Dylan, Justin, Zachary, Tristan, Jeremy, Josh, Jimmy, David Jr., Shannah, Ashley, Victoria, Tiffany, Lauren, and Taylor.
He also leaves behind several great-grandchildren and was deeply cherished by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Nelson was preceded in death by four siblings—Ángelo, Jesús, María, and Salvador—as well as his stepson, Charles.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Nelson’s life and legacy will be celebrated, and arrangements will be announced at a later date.
A private graveside burial will be held in accordance with his wishes.
