MARY MYERS Obituary

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Daugherty Myers passed away at age 98 on August 7, 2021, at Manor House in Seaford, Delaware.

Betty was born January 29, 1923, in Durham, NC, while her father, John Fenton “Mike” Daugherty was obtaining his PHD in Chemistry/Physics at the University of North Carolina.  Afterwards, her early years were spent in Sewanee, Tennessee, where her Father was Physics Professor at the University of the South.  In 1929 her family moved to Newark, Delaware, where her father was Physics Professor and later Dean of Men (1945-1955) at the University of Delaware until 1967.  Betty graduated from Newark High School in 1941.  She attended the University of Delaware for 2 years before receiving a call to study Nursing at Church Home & Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was Third in her graduating class in 1946.  Betty practiced as a private duty nurse in several hospitals in Wilmington, Delaware.  And she married James Maben Myers, Jr. on December 21, 1946, in Newark, Delaware.

She was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts of America, serving as a scout, a troop leader, and in various volunteer administrative positions for the Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council.  She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, attending for over 70 years at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Seaford, where she served in positions of President and Secretary of the Episcopal Church Women, Antique Show Chairperson, Sunday School teacher, and one of the first three women Vestry Members.

She was an avid mother, homemaker, bridge player, and crossword puzzle worker.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, John Fenton & Edna Mae Henry Daugherty; her sister, Dorothy Page Daugherty Beauchamp; her husband of 62 years, James Maben Myers, Jr., and sister-in-law Helen Myers Walls.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann (Peggy) and husband Richard Boyd and Susan Page Willey (Susie), both of Seaford.   She is also survived by two grandchildren – John Willey (wife San) of Milton, Delaware, and Heather Willey of Seaford, Delaware; five great-grandchildren: James, Eric, Joshua, Lexi, and Jordan Willey of Milton, Delaware, and sister-in-law Gerri Myers Ross of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.

 

Following a Memorial Service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 10am on Wednesday, August 11, a private burial will occur at old St. Anne’s Cemetery in Middletown, Delaware.
