John “Johnny Cakes” R. Trivits, age 64, of Laurel Delaware, passed away on January 26th, 2024, at home with his loving wife Kim at his side, surrounded by his family and friends. John was born on August 4th,1959, to the late Alfred Trivits, and Sara Marie Calloway Trivits. John graduated from Laurel High School in 1977 and remained a staunch supporter of his community and alma mater. Upon graduation John began a career of excellence becoming highly skilled in many trades. Throughout his career he was an expert carpenter, small business owner and retail store manager. He worked many years for Lowe’s starting as a retail associate, eventually working as a store manager opening new locations in Ohio, Michigan and Western Maryland. John was successful in whatever endeavor he chose but his love of family and community led him back to his beloved Laurel.
After returning he went to work at Baker’s Hardware in Millsboro and made many more lifelong friends. He became and was proud of being a certified “Master Gardener” through the University of Delaware and used that knowledge to help people both professionally and personally. Many sought John’s advice on social media for all matters gardening, which he was glad to accommodate. It was not unusual to see John on his tractor on his way to till someone’s ground so they could have a garden, never asking for anything more than a smile and a thank you.
John especially loved his apple trees, canning, always working toward sustainable living from home. Many enjoyed the invitation to come and help with cider making and many other activities. No one left empty handed.
He was a lifetime member of the Laurel Historical Society and was very knowledgeable regarding the town's history. He was a previous coach for the Laurel Little League and middle school softball team, played in the Laurel Men’s Softball league and served several years as a member of the Laurel Fire Department. He was particularly passionate for Bulldog football and local dirt track racing, sharing those passions with family and friends. John is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Kimberly Young Trivits, daughter Lindsay Givens (Matt), son Matthew (Lindze), seven grandchildren Alivia, Everett, Eliza, Adelia, Leyna, Wren and Texas, and his sister Annie Fellows of Massachusetts. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date at his home in late spring when his patio (where he enjoyed hosting family, friends and classmates) will be in full bloom.
