Donald Spencer Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald C. Spencer; a devoted husband, loving father of 2, proud grandfather of 6 and great-grandfather of 1.

Don was born on September 16, 1940, to Russell and Alberta Spencer in Salamanca, New York. He was one of six children. Life was not easy for Don, and at the age of 17, he made the courageous decision to sign himself into the United States Navy.

In 1962, Don met the love of his life, Gail Taylor. From the moment they crossed paths, their bond was undeniable. They married in October of 1963 and went on to share nearly 62 years of unwavering love, laughter, and partnership—a testament to their devotion and dedication.

Together, Don and Gail raised two children, Susan Michel (Charles) and Daniel Spencer (Mariela), nurturing a family grounded in love and adventure. Over the course of their marriage, they moved 15 times, embracing each new chapter with grace and curiosity.

Don built a distinguished career at IBM, where his work took him across the globe. He moved his family to Paris, France from 1977 to 1980, where Susan and Daniel attended the American School of Paris. Yet no matter how far he traveled, his heart remained anchored to his home and family. A lifelong learner, Don graduated with high honors from Syracuse University with a Master’s Degree, and his passion for education never waned. Over the years, he earned a second Master’s Degree and several Associate Degrees—each one a source of pride and a reflection of his intellectual spirit.

Don’s life was defined by his love for Gail, his dedication to family, and his insatiable curiosity. He leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, warmth, and wonder.

His happiest moments came with the arrival of his beloved grandchildren: Charles Michel, Christopher Michel (Samantha), Courtney Mitan (Alexander), Jack Spencer, Sophie Spencer, and Jennifer Spencer — and later, with the birth of his cherished greatgranddaughter, Lillian Mitan.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Gail, his parents and niece, Janet Horton. He is survived by his daughter Susan (Charles) and son Daniel (Mariela); his six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; his brother Russell Spencer, his sister-in-law Carol Ostmark (Jack) and brother-in-law Neil Taylor; his niece Nancy Ostmark ; and closest friend Jeanne Fragetta.

We’ll always carry Don in our hearts and hold tight to the memories we all made together. He meant so much to us, and those moments will stay with us forever.

A Celebration of Don’s life will take place on October 12th, 2025 (it would have been Don and Gail’s 62nd wedding anniversary) from 1pm-3pm at their home, 7 Sandpebble Drive in Seaford. Join us for lunch and refreshments.
