MARY PEGRAM Obituary

Mary Cook Pegram age 83, of Seaford, DE passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2018.

Mary grew up in Danville, Virginia where she was the youngest of four children in the Cook family and was affectionately called “Cookie”.  She was predeceased by her parents, Cinnie Mae Hall Cook and Clifton Dennis Cook and her sisters, Carolyn C. Wilkerson and Bettie C. Carter and her brother Clifton (Pete) Cook.

Mary always spoke fondly of her many memories growing up in Danville, VA and family beach vacations.  She remained in Virginia for her education graduating from Stratford and Longwood Colleges.  Soon after graduation she went to work at E. I. DuPont De Nemours & Company in Martinsville, VA, where she met her husband, Richard G. Pegram of Bassett, VA.  Mary and Richard married in September of 1959 and relocated to Seaford, DE in 1962, where Mary worked as a homemaker and mother to Bill and Susan.

Mary was a member of many organizations and enjoyed many sports and hobbies.  She was an active member of Grace Baptist Church where she enjoyed being on the flower committee and singing in the choir.  She was also instrumental in the design and landscaping of the new church sanctuary.  She also enjoyed sports and activities at the Seaford Golf & Country Club where she served on various committees, taught junior golf and won club championships in both golf and tennis.  Mary was also a proud member of P.E.O., which is a world-wide philanthropic and educational organization that began in 1869 where women assist and celebrate the advancement of women.

Mary loved music, particularly the piano, which she often played at home.  She also loved to garden and decorate and took great pride in her home and gardens.  However, Mary’s greatest love was her husband of almost 60 years and her children and grandchildren.  She was happiest spending time together with the family gathered at her home, often on the patio where everyone enjoyed her wonderful cooking and gracious southern hospitality.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Richard G. Pegram and her son, William R. Pegram (Megan) and daughter, Susan L. Pegram (Kyle Quillen).  She is also survived by five grandchildren, William R. Pegram, Jr, Nathan Pegram, Alyson Wallace, Thomas Asher Wallace Jr, and Emma Pegram as well as close family friend, Thomas A. Wallace, Sr (Krista).

Visitation will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 805 Atlanta Rd, Seaford, DE on Friday, June 8th from 1:00 to 2:00 PM followed by services at 2:00 PM.  A private burial will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, DE on June 15th.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests the memorials may be made to P.E.O. or Delaware Hospice.
