William B. “Bill” Mitchell, age 67, of Seaford, DE passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016.

          Bill retired from Independent News Media where he was a sports reporter.  After retiring he worked for The Leader and State Register and continued to freelance for the sports section of The (Harrington) Journal.  He also worked at Hooper’s Landing Golf Course.  When he wasn’t working you could probably find him practicing on the golf range or playing a round of golf.  One of his proudest accomplishments was winning The Seaford Golf and Country Club Championship in 2007 with his son, Greg as his caddie.  He was a Vietnam veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.  He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Orioles fan and enjoyed being engaged in a lively conversation. 

          Bill was a Nanticoke Little League manager for multiple decades. During that time he coached several championship all-star teams including a 13-year old Delaware State Championship team.  Both of his sons played on district title teams that he coached. 

          Bill was the son of the late, Doris Burke Harrelson and William Burkett Mitchell.  He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Flossie Mitchell, who raised him and a sister, Debbie Miller.  

He was a loving and devoted husband and father.  He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gerry, sons, Jeffrey of East Norriton, PA and Gregory and his wife, Elizabeth of Wilmington, DE, brothers, Todd Mitchell (Susan) and Robert Mitchell (Lisa), sister Michelle Omana (John), brother-in-law, Greg Miller and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

          Funeral Services will be on Friday, October 14th at 2 PM at the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St, Seaford, where friends may call from 12 to 2. 

          In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations may be made to The First Tee of Delaware, P O Box 419, Rockland, DE 19732 or thefirstteedelawar.org or the SPCA, 22918 DuPont Blvd, Georgetown, DE 19947.
