Joseph Benjamin Ewing Jr went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Ben was born on February 15, 1931 in Rehoboth, Delaware.  He was the son of the late J. B. Ewing Sr. and Gertrude Morgan Ewing. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Lowe Ewing, brother Richard Walker Ewing and son-in-law William Pritchett.  Ben graduated from Rehoboth High School in 1949 and upon graduation, entered into the United States Marine Corps, where he served for two years in the Korean War with the First Marine Division.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal with the rank of corporal in 1952 and received the 1995 Distinguished Service Award from the Marine Corps League.  He married Patricia Lowe Ewing in 1953.  In 1958 he joined the Delaware State Police and retired in 1978 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following his retirement, he served for twenty-one years as the Republican  House representative for the 35th district.  He was instrumental in the renovation and development of the new Visitors Center as a combined State Police barracks, paramedic unit and service center.  As a result, this building now bears his name.  He chaired the Public Safety Committee, where he was instrumental in developing the 911 Center, among many other achievements during his tenure as a representative of the 35th District.    He retired from public service in 2008.  Ben was a member of the Masonic Hiram Lodge No. 21 of the Scottish Rite.  He was also very involved with the Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville, DE, serving in every layman’s capacity, including Sunday School teacher, and was responsible for the beautiful stained glass windows in the sanctuary.  He is survived by his wife Kathryn (Kitty) Smith Ewing, his three children Benjamin Burton (Lois) Ewing, Richard Lowe Ewing (Kim), Penny Morgan Ewing Pritchett, nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, stepsons Vaughn, Jeff and Matt Esham, eight step-grandchildren and two step-grandsons. 

A visitation will be held at Union United Methodist Church, 201 North Laws Street, Bridgeville on Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The funeral service will be held in the auditorium of Woodbridge Middle School, 307 South Laws Street, Bridgeville on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 2 p.m.  Interment will be held at Bridgeville Cemetery immediately following the service.  Arrangements are being handled by Cranston Funeral Home in Seaford, DE.
